<image:title>News Paper Framing - Let’s talk about news paper framing:</image:title>
<image:caption>Every now & there is something in the news paper that isn’t completely depressing & is actually worth framing. Whether it is Drew Brees holding up the Lombardi trophy or your grandchild’s straight A’s school announcement, we are here to help at Magazine Street Framing. There are a few things to consider with news paper framing . . The first is news papers are printed on the cheapest paper available. They are meant to be thrown away at the end of the day, not cherished in a beautiful frame hanging on your wall. Because of this simple factor there is no way to keep them from yellowing or fading over time. That paper is riddled with acid & even the finest framing materials can’t make your paper last forever. However, there are some things you can do to extend the life of your story. When it comes to news paper framing there is a cool trick, most publications will actually print you a copy of your desired page on fine photography paper. This means you get a clear high def picture & crisp lettering. It is an excellent way to get the story on paper that will certainly stand the test of time. If the article can not be printed on nice paper don’t fret. You still have options. The best thing you can do is put it behind high quality glass. Now I’m not saying that it needs 99% UV Anti Reflective Museum glass (I get that it is just a piece of news paper), but a solid non-glare glass with some UV properties to will do your piece a world of good. More often than not a news paper story is started on one page & continued on another. Thus leaving the ever perplexing question as to how one gets the entire story in a frame without the end result looking like a toddler did a cut & paste job. Once again, this is where the experts at Magazine Street Framing come in & save the day. By precise measuring & skillful mat cutting we can take parts of the paper from each page & combine them seamlessly into one frame. Hopefully this has answered your questions about news paper framing but if it hasn’t, feel free to drop by or give us a call. Someone is always here to help with all of your custom framing needs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Canvas - The art of canvas stretching</image:title>
<image:caption>ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT! It is a pretty safe bet, that just about every painting you have ever seen hanging on a wall, has first been stretched around stretcher bars before it was framed. Some artists paint on already stretched canvases, and others tack their canvas up to a wall or other rigid structure & paint on it before it gets stretched. Stretching can be a tricky thing.. WHAT EXACTLY DOES STRETCHING MEAN? Well, to stretch a canvas means pulling the fabric tightly around a wooden infrastructure & stapling it to the back so the finished product has an even, wrinkle free, drum-like thud to it. This allows the image to be seen clearly. To determine the size of the painting you must do one of two things. If the painting has already been completed, simply measure the exact dimensions of the painted area on the canvas and build the stretcher bars to suit. If you are not confined by an already painted piece, then build the stretcher bars to any size you want & start the stretching process from there! THE SECRET TO A GOOD STRETCH Just like most aspects of life, a well stretched canvas is all about balance. You need to work your way around the canvas pulling in the opposite direction of the last staple you just put in the frame. See diagram for the proper technique As you can see, it is more difficult than it appears. This is especially true of a canvas that has already been painted on. The image has to remain lined up even though you are working with the painting face down. THE TWO STYLES OF STRETCHING There are two different ways to stretch a canvas. The first is called gallery wrapping. This is when the image is painted all the way around the sides of the painting. Typically these are stretched on deeper stretcher bars and can be hung without framing them. (See more on canvas framing here.) The second is when the painting stops without continuing around the sides of the bars. This is the most common style of stretching and tends to need a frame because the sides are left white and usually messy. Framing the stretched canvas covers up the unfinished sides & really completes the look of the painting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>HOW TO PICK A FRAME There are quite a few things to consider when it comes to framing articles of clothing. For one thing, unlike framing a work on paper or canvas, the item has to be floated inside of the frame. It can’t just be squished behind glass. This means that it has to be physically attached to the backing board. We use small clear tags here at Magazine Street Framing to secure it. They look like every one you have ever seen in any store in the world, but our trick is we use them upside down, so all you see is the tiny plastic backing piece. This allows us to pull the garment tight against the backing board so the article of clothing can keep its shape. In order to float it, we have to first build out a box. This can be made of plain white foam backing or matted to give your piece that pop it surely deserves. Since we are building a box, you will need a frame with a deep enough profile to cover the edges of the box. The depth of a particular moulding from the inside ledge to the base of the frame is called the rabbet. We suggest floating fabric in a frame with at least a 1.25″ rabbet. This allows for the glass, .75″ box & backing board. It can be done a little smaller, but not by much. We can frame jerseys, t-shirts, towels, handkerchiefs & just about any other fabric item. We encourage you to stop by with specialty items like this for a price quote.
